Long Beach, California, USA
Sulphur is removed from crude oil in the refining process to reduce the sulphur pollution, a major cause of lung disease and acid rain, when the gasoline is burned. That sulphur is often then sold as a commodity, having many industrial uses. Production of sulphuric acid, a building block for many industrial processes, is a common application.
