Semi-Submersible Offshore Drilling Rig At Spill Site

Gulf of Mexico
After the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig exploded and sank, the Macondo Well, which it had drilled, was gushing incomprehensible volumes of oil into the ocean. After numerous failed attempts to cap the damaged wellhead, two new rigs were brought in to drill relief wells that would intersect the original well, allowing them to staunch the flow of the leak by pumping in concrete under extreme pressure.
