Fresh Kills Landfill

Staten Island, NY

This landfill, opened in 1948 as a temporary repository for New York City garbage, quickly became the largest in the world, until its closure in 2001. Among its toxic legacies are the famous “Syringe Tides” during which medical waste from here would wash onto the beaches around New York.
