Sulphur is the source of significant pollution when it is burned, so it must be removed from any fuel source prior to distribution. The USA currently satisfies about 20% of its gasoline needs from the tar sands, and a pipeline is nearing completion for transport of this dirty crude from Alberta Canada to refineries on the hurricane prone Gulf Coast of the the USA.
