Rice fields were often large, wet, and inaccessible without modern emergency vehicles. Hurricanes can come relatively quickly without modern advance warning, and the enslaved people were the most valuable asset of a plantation. Thus hurricane-proof containment was built out in the remote rice fields to safeguard the investment.
