Beim sogenannten Skimmen lässt sich nur oberflächennahes, nicht jedoch in tieferen Wasserschichten verteiltes oder mit Hilfe von Dispersionsmitteln chemisch aufgebrochenes Öl entfernen, dessen Reste sich am Meeresboden absetzen.

Dem Abschöpfprozess fallen häufig auch Schildkröten, Delphine und sogar Wale zum Opfer, die später mit dem abgeschöpften Öl verbrannt werden.

Skimming collects the oil on the surface, but not sub aqueous, and not oil broken up by dispersants, which settles to the bottom. Often sea animals such as turtles, dolphins, and even whales are caught in the process, and perish when the collected oil is burned.
