Waste Pond

Spremberg, Germany

Coal combustion produces vast quantities of ash, in which all of the contaminants found in the coal are concentrated (except the mercury which evaporates). The others, including arsenic, uranium, boron, beryllium, selenium, are captured as best is possible, and suspended in the waste, and usually stored in unlined pits, from which toxins can leach into groundwater.
