Deforestation in the Canadian Boreal Forest
Kenogami Forest, Canada
The Kenogami forest, which hosts intact virgin old-growth forests, totals 4.86 million acres (1.96 million hectares), but less than 2.4% of it is protected from logging. Astoundingly, a substantial amount of the timber clearcutting taking place in the ancient Canadian Boreal is done to produce toilet paper and other disposable tissue products. Trees that have been standing for hundreds of years in forests that have never been cut are being lost to make a product that we use for about five seconds.
