A major fire started in eastern Western Thrace on August 21. The fire, possibly caused by arson, was stated to be "the largest recorded in the EU" up to this time with around 73.000 hectares (730 square kilometers) burnt. Most of the burnt area is concentrated in the Dadia Forest. Several migrants died when they were trapped by the flames near the Dadia Forest. The vast majority of the Dadia forest as well as the surrounding pine forests were destroyed with more than 80,000 hectares (198,000 acres) scorched.
