The Hambacher Variations
This is a video about the Hambacher Först, done to Bach's Goldberg Variations,
One of the last ancient forests in Germany has been progressively cut down by a power company to get the brown coal beneath it to fuel 3 power plants which are Europe’s largest source of greenhouse gas (and many other toxic pollutants).
In spite of the catastrophic deforestation, still 6 EU endangered species live in the remaining forest.
When activists started to build tree-houses in the forest 10 years ago in protest, the media and politicians decried them as lunatics and radicals.
But slowly the momentum of opposition grew until spring 2018, as the power company prepared to cut again, the press and social media were alight with dialog about the issue.
In September 2018, 50,000 Europeans marched peacefully into the forest, and with music and hope, demanded that it be saved.
Suddenly after years of unsuccessful petitions by environmental groups, the courts in Cologne reversed previous rulings and halted the deforestation.
This stops the digging of coal, which will shut off the fuel to the power plants.
A major victory for the climate and for all of humanity.
