Woman on beach of sinking Island taking selfie

Narcissus

Tangier Island, Virginia

This island is the poster child for ocean rise impact on coastal communities, having lost 66% of its land mass since 1850. Under previous sea level rise assumptions, it would be gone within the next 50 years. With the new reality of the collapse of The Thwaites Glacier, 10 years seems a more realistic prediction.

The woman, who spent at least 15 minutes taking selfies, seems to be a perfect metaphor for our contemporary self-absorption and obliviousness to the natural world and all that it gives us.
